Board Chair

Daniel Hernández is an ecosystem ecologist and professor of biology at Carleton College. He teaches courses in ecosystem ecology, grassland ecology, and an off-campus study program on socioecological systems of sustainability in Oaxaca, Mexico. His research focuses on ecosystem restoration and management of grasslands and he has worked in native prairies of western Minnesota, serpentine grasslands in California, and the restored prairies of Carleton's Cowling Arboretum.

He also investigates the ecological impacts of regenerative agriculture. In this work, funded by a recent grant from the USDA, Daniel partners with local farmers to understand the effects of sustainable land management practices on carbon sequestration and greenhouse gas emissions. He is motivated to work with Sharing Our Roots to promote a more socio-ecologically resilient agricultural system.
