  • Position: Full-time, Exempt (1.0 FTE)
    Hours: 40 hours/week, primarily Monday-Friday, with occasional evenings and weekends
    Location: Hybrid role: 2-3 days/week on site (with seasonal variation) at 4905 315th St. W., Northfield, MN, and the remainder remote
    Reports to: Board Chair

    POSITION SUMMARY

    The Executive Director (ED) provides strategic leadership for Sharing Our Roots during a time of organizational stabilization and growth. Working in close partnership with staff and the Board of Directors, the ED is responsible for:

    ● Leading strategic planning and strengthening board governance.
    ● Overseeing operations, finance, and staff development.
    ● Driving fundraising and resource development for a ~$1M annual budget.
    ● Ensuring SOR’s three programs—Farm (farmland access, support, and shared infrastructure), Community Connectors, and Land Restoration—thrive.
    ● Serving as SOR’s primary ambassador with funders, partners, and the community.

    The ED’s work involves ongoing priorities across fundraising, governance, staff leadership, partnership development, and program oversight, with flexibility to respond to the seasonal and evolving needs of the farm and community.

    PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES 

    Organizational Leadership & Staff Management:
    ● Lead SOR in alignment with its mission and Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (JEDI) principles, while adopting best practices in nonprofit management and governance.
    ● Supervise, coach, and evaluate staff; support professional growth and maintain a collaborative, accountable, and joyful workplace culture. 
    ● Work with the HR consultant to meet best practices in hiring, onboarding, performance management, and staff transitions. 
    ● Facilitate effective staff meetings, team building activities, and professional development opportunities that deepen staff connections and improve performance outcomes. 

    Fundraising & Financial Stewardship: 
    ● Lead fundraising efforts for SOR’s ~$1M budget, cultivating institutional funders, individual donors, and community supporters. 
    ● Partner with the Finance Director to manage budgets, forecasts, cash flow, and the annual audit.
    ● Oversee grant writing and reporting, working with staff or contractors as needed.
    ● Engage the Development Committee and Board in fundraising strategy and execution. 

    Board & Governance:
    ● Partner with the Board of Directors to strengthen governance, support effective decision-making, and provide timely reporting. 
    ● Support board recruitment and development to expand skills, diversity, and community representation. 
    ● Ensure compliance with nonprofit laws, policies, and ethical standards. 

    Programs & Partnerships: 
    ● Ensure SOR’s three core programs thrive: 
    Farm: Supporting farmer access to land, shared infrastructure, and support as needed.
    Community Connectors: Partnering with immigrant families to grow culturally important
    foods in community gardens. 
    Land Restoration: Monitoring land and water restoration and the return of biodiversity.
    ● Cultivate strong partnerships with farmers, gardeners, landowners, and community organizations.
    ● Facilitate farmer cohort conversations, supporting collaboration and conflict resolution.
    ● Working with staff, develop market access opportunities for farmers. 
    ● Strengthen connections with Northfield and Twin Cities partners, schools, and universities.

    Communications & Public Presence:
    ● Serve as SOR’s primary ambassador with funders, partners, and the public.
    ● Oversee external communications, brand, and public messaging in collaboration with staff.
    ● Support development of an annual impact report and ongoing community updates.

    SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS 

    Required: 
    ● Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience. 
    ● 5+ years of nonprofit leadership experience, including staff supervision and organizational management. 
    ● Proven fundraising success with both institutional funders and individual donors.
    ● Experience reporting to or serving on a nonprofit board of directors. 
    ● Strong organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills. 
    ● Excellent writing, public speaking, and relationship-building abilities. 
    ● Intercultural communication skills and sensitivity to BIPOC, immigrant, and LGBTQ+ lived experiences and historical trauma. 
    ● Experience leading diverse teams and commitment to equity. 
    ● Interest in sustainable farming, food systems, produce operations, land stewardship, land and water restoration, and comfort with seasonal land-based work. 
    ● Proficiency with nonprofit software and tools (Google Workspace, QuickBooks or similar, Zoom, donor databases, and Constant Contact or similar). 
    ● Valid driver’s license and ability to commute to Northfield 2-3 days per week.

    Preferred:
    ● Spanish language fluency (oral and written). 
    ● Background in farming, food systems, produce operations, land stewardship, or farm land access initiatives. 
    ● Experience managing capital projects or shared infrastructure (e.g. equipment or facilities).
    ● Understanding of cooperative or shared leadership structures. 
    ● Financial management skills: budgeting, forecasting, and nonprofit financial oversight.

    COMPENSATION & BENEFITS 

    Salary: $90,000-$105,000, commensurate with experience 
    Health & Dental Insurance: 100% premium covered by SOR (eligible after 60 days)
    Retirement: SIMPLE IRA with 2% employer match 
    Paid Time Off (PTO): 120 hours annually 
    Paid Holidays: 19 days annually 
    Earned Sick & Safe Time (ESST): Up to 6 days annually 
    Phone stipend: $25/month
